The music is slow and drifting.
Sometimes it is quiet, sometimes it is noisy.
Sometimes it is graceful and melodic, sometimes it is grainy and atmospheric.

"I started The ambient drones of Bill Baxter as a secret project, probably sometime in 2015. I was already experimenting with music that was more minimal, that lacked beats or any particular melody. I wanted to experiment further with sounds, to create something deeply ambient and satisfying that didn't always sound musical. I was inspired by my urban surroundings - the constant noise and busy-ness around my house near the centre of Manchester nearly 24 hours a day. While I was inspired by this, I think I subconsciously wanted something that could overpower that constant noise and block it out. That something would have to be loud and would have to last a long time.

"I started experimenting, creating soundscapes that fit the bill very nicely and quickly I amassed a collection of longform, deeply ambient drones.

"The music can be loud. It can be noisy. It can be gentle and almost silent. My feeling is to treat it like classical music where wide variations in volume are commonplace. And where much of my other music can seem like it's floating high in the air, this muci is rooted deep underground.

"In March 2016, I started to share these with the world, quite anonymously. After a while, the music started to attract an audience. Listeners seems to like the long, deep, slow, noisy drones I was creating.

"After a couple of years, a number of people started to realise who was behind this and in 2019, I decided to quietly admit I was behind this project - no fanfare, just adding my name to the credits.

"At time of writing, there have been 99 albums (and one radio session) released by The ambient drones of Bill Baxter. I thought it might be a good time to start to help listeners new and old navigate an already bewildering back catalogue.

"I know full well that this won't be to everyone's taste - it will be too long, dark and noisy for some people - but for others, there is a wealth of ambient drones to explore and to keep exploring."
