about

Outtakes and alternative versions from the 28 Pieces project.

28 Pieces is an album of 28 pieces of music, each completely written and recorded from scratch on each day of February 2022. For one reason or another these tracks did not make it onto the actual album. Some are alternative versions that I wanted to share, some I wasn't happy with on the day so created something else for the album and some were created after the track that made it onto the 28 Pieces album.

It has been quite a journey. I was fairly confident but I didn't know whether I could create a new piece of music every day for 28 days in a row. Some days I felt the pressure, especially when also working long tiring shifts. Other days, I felt inspired and created a lot of music and enjoyed experimenting with various means of creation and introducing new items to my studio set-up.

Notes on the music (written on the day they were recorded):

01. Breathe In The Mountain Air (Longer Version) (2 February 2022)
An alternative mix to the original version.
Generative layers like music for airports.
Generative ambient music. Each instrumental part plays in a loop. Each loop is of a different length, so they repeat and quickly fall out of sync.
Think Eno's Music for Airports of my own album Extensions of Reality bingsatellites.bandcamp.com/album/extensions-of-reality
I started with the warm guitar part and built around it with various synths and ebowed guitar.

02. No Stars Through A Hazy Sky (3 February 2022)
First attempt of the day, recorded straight after a work shift.
At the time, I didn't feel like this was the best I could do, perhaps because the mood of it was too sombre.

03. Into Deep Blue (3 February 2022)
Second attempt of the day, abandoned because I made a mistake.
I was definitely feeling the pressure to produce something out of nothing.
By my third attempt, I was more relaxed and happier with what I created.

04. In My Arms (4 February 2022)
Recorded a few hours after Let Love Guide The Way.
I was feeling inspired after creating a piece of music I really enjoyed.

05. The Universal Note (5 February 2022)
Recorded several hours after The Universal Thought.
On day 3, I was feeling pressure to create something, or rather, putting pressure on myself to create something.
Since then, however, I have been feeling inspired.
I have a studio set up with a palette of sounds that slowly evolves. The immediacy of this project has meant I have tried new things and have been introducing new sounds to my studio set-up every day.
It is a lot of fun. It will be interesting to see where this month takes me and just how much music I will produce.

06. Among the Cloud People (Meditation Bells) (12 February 2022)
A different, more peaceful arrangement of the original version focusing on the bells and percussion.

07. Metamorphosis (for two pianos) (14 February 2022)
An exploration of the original track as a backing for two pianos.

08. Sundowner (17 February 2022)
The first attempt of the evening. I wanted something delicate and intimate but this expanded so much that I decided to go for something else for the original album. On another day, in a different mood, this may well have ended up in the place of Moonriser.

09. Deep Space Glissando (18 February 2022)
Although I had already completed the day's track for 28 Pieces, I felt the need to do something else.
This piece begins with three pitch-shifted layers of glissando guitar. Everything else fell into place around it.
It is a track that could go on for some time exploring the different elements it contains. There are deep rumbles, ethereal echoes and delicate sounds all mixed together. It is another piece that feels too loud and massive to be labelled as ambient music.
This is what is so wonderful about making music, especially ambient, atmospheric and experimental - you can literally try anything. There are no rules!

10. Welcome to the Void (Meditation Bells) (27 February 2022)
I recorded several parts for bells and percussion when creating the original version of this piece but realised that they were not needed. However, I find these layered bells very soothing so I decided to do a second version which focuses on them.
